GAY CULTURE PROJECT

Rainbow Wellington Chair Tony Simpson, wearing his hat as a writer of social history, is embarking on a gay project and is looking for volunteers. Basically what he is doing is building up an archive of the various dimensions of the life of the gay community from about 1960 to 1986 (and a little bit beyond).

This unique life style and culture is now disappearing post decriminalisation, and exists largely only in the recollection of those who took part in it. It needs and deserves to be preserved. Material he collects will be deposited in the Oral History Archive of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and is prospectively the subject of a book. He will also be interviewing in Auckland and Christchurch. He has developed a standard interview schedule and would like to hear from those who would like to assist. The contributions can be anonymous if that's what people prefer. You can email him on sugarbags@xtra.co.nz or ring him on 04 384 3180 to talk to him about it and to arrange an interview session if the idea appeals. He's keen to hear from people accordingly.

Queer Tango Wellington

E-mail: messenger@queertangowellington.com
Web: www.queertangowellington.com
Location: Check website for venue

A queer perspective is one that allows and encourages fluid and changing gender roles, images and identities. Queer tango breaks the rigid gender roles of the tango world. It's a home for same sex dance partners, women who like to lead, men who like to follow, and anyone else interested in new ways of experiencing the roles of the dance, like swapping the lead. Classes are in the nuevo tango style and everyone is encouraged to take turns leading and following as we learn new steps. Above all, queer tango is inclusive, which means that people are welcome to dance tango in any role they want, including the traditional ones.

Nuevo tango is particularly well suited to the queer practice of swapping the lead during the dance, but like all Argentine tango, it's about connection and learning to listen to another person with your body. As the leader interprets the music (dancing to the rhythm or melody as they wish), the attentive follower is ready to go in any direction at every moment, so the dancing couple is able to move as one, although every step is improvised.

You do not need to bring a partner, previous dance experience, or rhythm.

We encourage gender complexity and exploration. Everyone is welcome. Tango has no age limit

SAME-SEX COUPLE ADOPTION - TALK BY CLAUDIA GEIRINGER: Thursday 19 August

Time: The upstairs bar will be open for drinks from 5.30
Location: Kitty O'Shea's, 28 Courtenay Place, starting at 6 pm

Claudia is the barrister who won the recent landmark Court case for de facto heterosexual couple adoption. She will speak about the case itself, the Bill of Rights issues involved, the input from the Attorney-General, how the case was won, and possible strategies for the next step. She is very willing to take questions and input from the floor.

Claudia is also a wonderful speaker. As well as practising as a barrister, she lectures on the Bill of Rights at Victoria University. She understands all the issues and is well aware of the issues for same-sex couples. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss any Bill of Rights, Human Rights, Equality, Constitutional issues etc with someone who has in-depth knowledge, understanding and experience in these areas.

We are honoured that Claudia has accepted our invitation to speak to us. This event is open to all, and we would be grateful if you would pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested, and in particular we would like to reach as many same-sex couples with children as possible. Such couples do not need to identify themselves as such, but may like to attend.

UNITY BOOKS EVENING: Monday 23rd August

We have brought forward slightly the date of our regular annual visit to Unity Books, to take advantage of a visit to Wellington by famous crime fiction writer Val McDermid. She is the author of the Tony Hill books, which TV's Wire in the blood series is based on.

Time: 6.00 PM
Location: Unity Books, 57 Willis Street
Drinks: The entrance fee will get you into the event, with free nibbles, and two free drinks. Further drinks can be purchased at the bar.
Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Pay at the door.

So there will be a slightly different format to our normal book review evening, not linked this year to the Lambda Book awards. Tilly of Unity Books writes, "The plan at present is for half a dozen of us to review just a few major recent and local GLBTI books, possibly a poem or song from Hinemoana Baker, and then finish the evening with Val McDermid - possibly a small reading and also some Q&A if she is agreeable."
