Health Helpers Listing Criteria

Information for gay men and women about how we decide to list counsellors, medical practioners and others providing health helping services

Helpers are defined here as those individuals that provide confidential, one to one services related to spiritual, mental or physical health where there is potential for harm to vulnerable people through unethical practices. Included are those providing counselling, medical and massage services.

Note 1: Medical Practitioners (GPs etc) are specifically excluded from this definition because they have different but formalised disciplinary system.

Note 2: This policy does not provide for blanket approval of organizations providing helping services.

Criteria for Listing

  1. Must be a full member of an approved organization.
  2. The organization must be properly constituted with a constitution, rules, a Code of Ethics and a disciplinary process available to recipients of services.
  3. Must be under regular supervision (at least monthly).
  4. Must identify as gay or lesbian or able to show that they have training or other attributes related to safety of gay clients.

A list of Approved Organizations will be maintained and added to as new organizations meeting the approval criteria are identified.
